If you’re like me, you love waking up to the smell of fresh coffee. There’s something inherently magical about the process of grinding fresh beans, boiling hot water, and pouring that first cup. However, it can be hard to find a cup that tastes as good as it smells. Especially when it comes to organic coffee.

Who Owns Volcanica Coffee?

Maurice Contreras is the Founder and CEO of Volcanica Coffee, and he works alongside his wife and two adult children to make the family business a success.

The business actually started over 17 years ago in the Contreras’ garage. Now it’s blossomed into a much larger company with over 50 employees.

Where Is Volcanica Coffee Located?

Volcanica Coffee is headquartered just outside of Atlanta in Suwanee, Georgia, which is where they roast their beans.

Where Do Volcanica’s Coffee Beans Come From?

Volcanica Coffee purchases its beans from farmers all over the world. They offer everything from African coffees to Columbian and the coveted Jamaican Blue Mountain varieties.

What Kind Of Coffee Does Volcanica Carry?

There are over 150 different varieties of coffee offered by Volcanica Coffee. You can purchase these beans whole or ground, and in light, medium, and dark roasts. You can also choose from organic, shade-grown, and fair trade varieties.

Are There Any Non-Acid Coffees?

There’s no such thing as naturally acid-free coffee, but Volcanica offers 23 different low acid varieties that will be easier on your stomach and help you get that perfect cup of morning joe. If you tend to get heartburn after drinking coffee, Volcanica especially recommends trying their Sumatran and Brazilian coffees.

The Coffee We Tried

Since we prefer drinking coffee that’s organic, shade-grown, and fair trade, Volcanica sent us their Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee (which is shade-grown) and their Fair Trade Organic Peru Coffee to try.

To be completely honest with you, we weren’t expecting anything too amazing. To our surprise though, these coffees both tasted really good, and there was a definite difference in the taste compared to the coffee we usually drink.

Each cup of coffee had a strong, rich flavor that we weren’t expecting to enjoy as much as we did.

Volcanica Organic Coffee – Peru Coffee

Our first cup was the Peru Coffee, which the brand says is fair trade and organic, but it is not USDA certified (which is why it didn’t make it onto our list of favorite organic coffees.)

I reached out to the brand to learn more about their organic growing methods, and they told me that they’re in the process of getting their USDA label. It takes a good amount of time to go through the USDA certification process, so hopefully they’ll have that in the next couple of months.

In the meantime, they made sure to let me know that “no chemical pesticides or artificial chemicals are used,” the farmers “rely on birds and other wildlife to take care of any pests or bugs,” and “for fertilizer they use natural compost and the volcanic soil which is already rich in nutrients.”

(Why Is Organic Coffee Better?)

I went ahead and tried the coffee, and I ground it into a medium roast before brewing.

(By the way, if you need a good coffee grinder, we really like this one.)

I’ve always enjoyed black coffee, but lately I’ve gotten into the habit of putting a splash of oat milk in my morning cup because it cools things down quick enough that I can start sipping almost immediately.

I also grind and prep my coffee the night before and set my coffee maker to automatically brew it at the same time each morning.

(I have three kids under age 6. Enough said.)

Since I was reviewing Volcanica though, I ground it that morning, brewed it fresh, and drank it black. That way I could get a true idea of how it tasted.

First and foremost, the coffee smelled divine.

As I mentioned before, I absolutely love waking up to the smell of coffee, and this morning was no different. The scent wafted through the house and made me even more eager to get out of bed and start my day.

When a cup of black coffee smells this good, you cross your fingers that it will taste the same way.

And, thankfully, the coffee definitely lived up to the smell.

At first sip, the Peru coffee really did taste like a high-quality cup of coffee should: strong and smooth.

As it cooled down, I could taste the flavors even more, and there wasn’t a bitter aftertaste. It would be great as a cold brew!

We were pleasantly surprised by how good this one tasted, and we didn’t need to add any additional creamer or sweetener to mask the flavor. In fact, I liked it better black.

Since brewing that first pot of coffee, I’ve brewed it my regular way as well (prepping it all the night before), and I think it’s just as good.

Volcanica Shade-Grown Coffee – Costa Rica Peaberry

Our second cup of coffee was Volcanica’s Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee.

This bean has a medium roast and is shade-grown, which we prefer because the growing process is more sustainable and naturally uses fewer pesticides.

This coffee, unfortunately, is not organic though.

I tried this one mid-week, so I prepped it like I usually do, which I explained above. (I ground it up the night before and set the coffee to brew automatically the next morning.) Yes, I know this isn’t the best way to make coffee, but this is what works for my family most days, and I know others reading my Volcanica Coffee review may do the same thing, so I wanted to see how the coffee tasted when prepped that way.

I can’t say I was disappointed.

This coffee tastes just as good when you don’t take extra time to make it the traditional way.

Even if you don’t normally drink your coffee black, the Costa Rica Peaberry Coffee creates a smooth blend that tastes delicious and doesn’t need anything extra for you to enjoy it.

The flavor is complex and has a lingering sweetness.

My husband and I both liked this one a lot, and there was no bitterness at all. We’d definitely recommend it to others looking for great shade-grown coffee.

Is Volcanica Coffee Good?

Though we haven’t tried all of Volcanica’s 150+ coffee varieties, based on the two that we did try, we think Volcanica Coffee is very good, and we’re ready to try more.

They’ve definitely earned a spot on my list of favorite coffee brands!

Volcanica Coffee’s Sustainability

I wouldn’t say Volcanica is the most sustainable coffee roaster out there, but the company is committed to sourcing high-quality beans, which are typically more sustainable than lower-quality coffee.

The company also has a commitment to giving back to those in need, which we love! They donate 1% of their sales to Charity: Water.

Is Volcanica Fair Trade?

Volcanica Coffee Company is not fair trade as a whole, but they do offer a wide selection of Fair Trade coffees that are better for the farmers who grow the beans.

I was impressed with how many Fair Trade Certified options they have on their website, and I’m looking forward to trying more in the future.
