Guide to Buying a Safe Non-Toxic Waffle Maker

Buying a non-toxic waffle maker doesn’t have to be hard. But there are some things you should know before you start shopping. When people head into the big box stores to buy appliances, toxicity is a concept that isn’t really on our minds. After all, we’re just buying a waffle maker right?

When it comes down to it though, if you want your house and body free from toxins then what’s important is not only where you shop but also which products you choose for your kitchen.

Do Waffle Makers Have Teflon?

Yes, traditional waffle makers are typically coated with PTFE (aka Teflon) to make them non-stick. There are other options available on the market though. We’ll talk a bit more about those other options below, but first, let’s talk a little bit about why you should avoid Teflon waffle makers.

PTFE is a man made chemical. Basically, it’s just an abbreviation for polytetrafluoroethylene – and that stuff can’t be broken down by nature or your body so you’re stuck with any toxins from the waffle maker in your system until they are released into the air when you discard them (and considering how often we replace kitchen items these days…).

Teflon isn’t good for those who have asthma because exposure to PTFE dust particles may cause breathing difficulties. Also, it scratches easily which means those particles are going into your waffles! Yuck!

Are Non-Stick Waffle Makers Safe?

Due to the coated lining, non-stick waffle makers are typically not safe.

The coating material, generally a polymerized form of PTFE known as Teflon (either Polytetrafluoroethylene or polyfluorooctane (PFOA)), contains chemicals that can be emitted in the air when heated up.

When it’s heated to high temperatures, these chemicals are released into the air and become more concentrated – this is called “off-gassing”.

While you’re probably not heating your waffle maker for long periods of time at such extreme temperature levels, there still might be some off-gassing happening while cooking.

There are some alternatives to PTFE and PFOAs. However, they can still have a negative effect on your health just like PTFE or PFOAs.

Gen X is a manmade chemical alternative to Teflon created by Dupont. It can be found in food packaging, nonstick coatings, and other commercial products. While there isn’t a ton of research around this chemical…it’s still manmade and still toxic. There were also negative findings in the research that was completed on lab rats, so we imagine the scenario would be similar for humans.

What is DuraCeramic Coating Made Of?

You can almost think of DuraCeramic as a clay material that is composed of oxygen and silicon, that is cured by fire to give us some of the appliances we know today.

It is a non-toxic, environmentally friendly material that can withstand temperatures up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit, and free of PTFE and PFOAs.

Is Ceramic Better Than Teflon?

In terms of being concerned about toxic chemicals and health, yes. However, when it comes to cooking with ceramic, some say that is not as “non-stick” as they would like, which is one of the main reasons they are purchasing an appliance with that material to start with.

Ceramic coatings also offer a more natural look than toxic PTFE as well!

The Best Materials for a Non-Toxic Waffle Maker

There are many materials that can be used to create the best non-toxic waffle maker, but some stand out more than others due to their durability and longevity in comparison with other material choices.

Cast Iron. While cast iron may not be non-stick initially, it can become even better than Teflon as it’s seasoned over time! It’s important to note that when cleaning cast iron appliances and pans you should not use soap and detergent. Simply use water and a rag to clean and make sure it is dry before storing. You can learn more about how to care for cast iron cookware in our guide to non-toxic cookware.

Stainless Steel. Stainless steel is another great option to replace Teflon. Stainless steel doesn’t off-gas toxic chemicals, and it’s extremely durable too.

Ceramic. DuraCeramic products are great to use! Other ceramic materials, however, have an additional coating where manufacturers can sneak in nasty materials. Be sure to read the label good on this one!
